The death of a loved one is a difficult time for family and friends.
A death is usually registered by the funeral director. Once the death has been registered you can apply for a Victorian death certificate(s).
Victoria offers two legal death certificates:
- a death certificate with the cause of death, and
- a death certificate without the cause of death.

Next of kin: notify organisations of the death
You can use the Australian Death Notification Service to notify organisations that someone has died. Choose from multiple organisations, such as banks and utility companies. This eases the process of getting accounts closed or transferred. This service checks the deceased person’s details against the Australian Death Check. This system holds death data from Birth, Deaths and Marriages registries across Australia.
Organisations: access national death data
The Australian Death Check is a new data cleansing service. It is the only official source of national death data for Australia. It enables commercial organisations to cleanse customer databases against national death records.A Fact of Death service is also available, for government agencies only.
