The death of a loved one is a difficult time.
You may need to go through the time-consuming process of closing your loved one's accounts.
Each organisation - from banks to utility companies - may ask you to prove the death has occurred.
That means providing them with the death certificate... and the sometimes painful information it holds.
This is why Victoria now offers two death certificates.
Some private information, like the cause of death, is not on the new legal death certificate.
This makes it easier for you to keep this information private where possible.
Some organisations (like superannuation and insurance companies) will still need to know the cause of death.
This is where you would use the death certificate with cause of death.
Both certificates can be ordered together as a package. This gives you choice in how to manage your loved one’s affairs.
